4. Puerto Rican Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo platypterus brunnescens)

This hawk is endemic to Puerto Rico and has a declining population due to deforestation and habitat degradation. It is susceptible to collisions with power lines and structures.

5. Puerto Rican Crested Toad (Bufo lemur)

This toad is found in the rainforests of the island. It faces threats from habitat destruction, climate change, and a fungal disease known as chytridiomycosis.

Causes of Endangered Status

The primary causes of endangerment for these species include:

*Habitat loss and degradation: Deforestation, urbanization, and infrastructure development have significantly reduced the available habitat for endangered species.
*Introduced species: Non-native species such as mongooses, cats, and rats compete for food and habitat, or prey on endangered animals.
